This was my 4th year of showing up to the event known as the Adult Soapbox Derby that takes place at Mt. Tabor. This year it was run by a different group of people and it was obvious. It seemed a little bit more put together BUT they were so slow at getting things together. It was slowed by sweeping of hay on the course from hay bales. But after that it was just a little bit slower between races which is understandable because they are new and it takes time to figure everything out. With all the safety things going on this was oddly damaging for spectators. Check out the post from PDXPIPELINE it has some videos of the crash's. But other then that, amazing cars this year or soapboxes if you will. Easily one of the best ever besides last years Optimus Prime. This was a first.
I received an email from one of the builders and this was his note on construction.
"The wine casks are from French oak covered in mountain bike/road bike tires and sit on a cast iron '57 Ford truck dropped axle. The brakes are off a racing Suzuki GSX-R that were warped, but straight enough to stop an out-of-round barrel. The siren is from an old police car with the .50 cal ammo box hiding tools and battery. Handlebars are vintage Triumph with leather wrap donated by Langlitz."
Wow, I am blown away at the soapbox, bike, winebike, my friends who had two cars in the show didn't even let me chill for a couple minutes before they were asking me if I had seen the wine barrel soapbox.
