Saturday night, and in to the wee hours of Sunday morning, I joined Sergeant Tim Robinson, AKA "T-Rob" for my 3rd ridealong with the Portland Police Bureau. Sgt. Robinson is in charge of patrolling the entertainment district of downtown Portland, and given that it was a Saturday night, in the middle of Pride Weekend, and the weather was good, I knew that we were going to have a busy night. Calls ranged from public disturbances at clubs and bars downtown, to a stabbing victim over near old town (we were the first unit on scene). Over the course of the evening, I even witnessed a guy getting hit by a car while trying to cross Burnside on a red light. The guy is fine (save for a bit of road rash), and I'm pretty sure that the woman who was involved in the stabbing is ok, too, as her injuries didn't seem life threatening at the time. Oh, and let's not forget the Naked Bike Ride which kicked off at midnight that Saturday night. Something near to 3000 cyclists participated in this, and of course, Sgt. Robinson had to help make sure that this all progressed smoothly (which it did, I'm happy to say). Traffic was tied up for what seemed to be a half an hour as people rode by, much to the enjoyment of onlookers on the crowded sidewalks. Seeing the expression on Sgt. Robinson's face as he stood in the middle of the intersection of SW 3rd and Couch downtown as this naked bike parade went by him was priceless. Sgt. Robinson doesn't have the easiest job in the world by any means, but as he told me that Saturday night, each day brings something new, and his job is never dull. He also has a good relationship with the club and bar owners in the area. As we rolled by various establishments, bouncers would greet us with friendly waves and give us the quick update on how the night had been going for them. We even did a few walkthroughs of bars, just to make sure that they weren't beyond capacity and to insure that everyone was having a fun and safe time. I wasn't home until nearly 4 am, Sunday morning, but the night had seemed to fly by.
I managed to snap a photo on my phone of the naked bike ride. In a sort of endearing way, I like how my phone's camera decided to focus on the couple hugging.
More soon on my ridealong adventures with the Portland Police Bureau!
