Peter Murphy (Aladdin Theater, 6/3/09)

It's amazing to think that a man just shy of 52 years old has the sort of energy to do what he still does on stage.  My wife and I were incredibly impressed with his show last night at The Aladdin (SE Portland).  Drawing from material of the past and present, solo tracks as well as Bauhaus material, Peter was a seemingly never-ending blur of energy and intensity for near to 2 hours on stage.  All of the trademark Peter Murphy moves were in place, and he was backed by a great sounding band as well.  Personal high points for me were the cover of "Transmission" by Joy Division in the 2nd encore, as well as Peter's own "mashup" of "Strange Kind Of Love" in to "Bela Lugosi's Dead."  If you were at the show, and it looked as though he was looking right at you at a certain point, here's the truth: he was.  Peter told me last night that with each of his shows, he always does his utmost best to connect with the audience.  Observing people and their reactions is something that plays in to his live shows each and every time.  His cover songs have always been enjoyable to see live, and seeing him perform them makes me look forward even more to his upcoming album of covers, due out later this Fall. dsc01572
