A Ride-along with the Portland Police
First off, this was something that I had always been intrigued by, but never actually done, and that was accompany one of the members of the Portland Police Department for an evening to see what it was all about. My first ridealong was a couple of weeks ago with Officer Churella. We patrolled the downtown precinct and were out until about 1 am! We responded to an amazing variety of calls (drunk in public, hit and run, armed and potentially suicidal subject, and a guy who had two different warrants out on him for parole violations that we picked up over in NW). I really got the chance to see the inner workings of what happens at the bureau. One of the greatest things was that one of the officers was actually watching “Cops” on TruTV in the break room of the downtown precinct. That was pretty awesome..
I was actually surprised by a few different things about police work. First off, a lot of the job is about helping out average citizens, and not always about simply “getting the bad guy” but also being someone that people can talk to. It seemed that a good portion of the time, people were approaching Officer Churella simply for help, or advice about something. The other thing was, the time seemed to fly by. I'm not sure if it was my nervous energy, but before I knew it, it was past 1 am. I figured that I had better go home and get some sleep, but I was already looking forward to my next ride-along.
